    Beirut 1873 (July 10): Letter sheet from Beirut to Lyon, franked with 1872 Cérès 80 c. rose tied by Gros chiffres '5082' numeral, "BEYROUTH SYRIE 2 JUIL. 73" cds in black and framed "PAQUEBOTS DE LA MEDITERRANEE" in red alongside, reverse with Marseille transit and Lyon arrival cds (July 22). The cover was underpaid for the double rate, an "AFFRANCHISSEMENT INSUFFISANT" handstamp in black added, and the receiver had to pay '12' décimes. A suberb cover. rnNote: Unpaid or underpaid covers had a higher postage than those paid in advance, a paid cover at double rate was twice 80 c., an unpaid cover was twice 100 c. The receiver had to pay 200 c. - 80 c. franking = 120 c.
