'V.R.I.' with level stops 1900 (March 19): 1 d. on 1 d. deep brown of 1868, the so-called 'error of colour', an unused vertical pair of excellent colour, fresh and very fine, large part or unmounted og. Perforations a bit weak between the pair but an extremely rare stamp in a multiple. Cert. RPSL (1953), BPA (1993) Gi = £ 1'200.rnrnProvenance: Ritchie Bodily, April 1953.rn Spink, London, 5 April 2006, lot 756.rnrnNote: The National Bank of South Africa returned approximately 50 of the 1 d. brown and 100 of 1868/94 1 s. orange-yellow for overprinting after the Occupation of Bloemfontein on 13 March 1900. The overprinting was done and the stamps returned to the bank. The matter was referred to Major O'Meara who made efforts to recover the stamps. However, the Major's superior Officer, Colonel Williams, was president of Sidney Philatelic Society and it is more than likely that he, and others, shared the spoils, as most of the 50 examples of the 1 d. brown survived, whilst fewer of the initially more abundant 1 s. orange-yellow value (Gi. 110a) appear to have been donated to collectors but were, in actual fact, destroyed.
