First Printing Overprinted "G" in 7 upright Types 1877 (March): Cape 1 d. carmine-red optd. "G" in black, a horizontal strip of three (all Type 1a) and a block of six (Types 3-3-2 / 4-4-5, sheet positions 45-47/ 51-53) and 1 s. green optd. "G" in red (Type 6) used with March 1877 1 d. carmine-red optd. "G.W." in black in a horizontal pair and a remarkable strip of six together with single 4 d. blue optd. "G.W." in red; all tied to 1877 registered cover to Antwerp by double arc KIMBERLEY datestamps (March 13) in black. Five stamps removed with "Registered / Cape Town. Cape Colony" datestamp at right (March 19) and "Registered / London" transit on front in red and reverse with Antwerp arrival cds's (April 14). A few imperfections but a quite extraordinary and spectacular Griqualand franking - the letter almost certainly containing rough diamonds sent to Antwerp for cutting.rnrnNote: This cover was responsible for Stanley Gibbons listing the 1877/78 issues from March 1877 rather than April (letter from the late Alan Drysdall to David Aggersburg attached). It is, therefore, the earliest known usage of the "G" overprints on cover and, as far as we are aware, the sole recorded usage of both values of the "G.W." provisionals used with the "G" overprinted issue.
