    Austrian Lloyd Agency in Canea, Crete 1857 (Nov 4): Entire letter from Canea to Trieste, initially charged 3 kr. for local post, altered to '9' kreuzer charge for ship mail rate- as Trieste was outside the Levant ring this was illegal but apparently accepted. The cover struck with fine oval framed Sunburst "AGENZIA DEL LLOYD AUSTRIACO / CANEA" handstamp in green. Reverse with Trieste arrival cds (Nov 10) in red. Illustrated in Hans Smith 'The Austrian Post Offices in the Levant' on page 40.
