1859: 6 d. blue, no wmk., rough perf. 14, single usage on 1861 cover to Richmond with embossed pink seal on flap 'Colonial Secretary's Office, Natal', tied by "1" numeral obliterator with corresponding PIETERMARITZBURG / Crown / NATAL cds at right (Dec 18). Manuscript endorsement on reverse "Colenso's letter on classic mathematics". Closed opening tear at top away from adhesive but an unusual and attractive cover.rnrnNote: John William Colenso (1814-1883) was Bishop of Natal from 1853-1883. he wrote the first Zulu-English dictionary. His 1859 journey across Zululand to visit Mpande (the then Zulu King) and meet with Cetshwayo (Mpande's son and the Zulu King at the time of the Zulu War) was recorded in his book First Steps of the Zulu Mission.
