1894: "Africa Essays", the extraordinary Appendix sheet from the De La Rue archives, with 15 perforated Colour Trials all for 2½ d. value in different colours, annotated in manuscript with values from ½ d. to a proposed £ 5 value in royal purple. A similar page is illustrated in the 'De La Rue Collection' edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 6001 headed 'Appendix for the South African Republic' dated on the same day - this being the duplicate sheet produced for the Cape Colony. The Essays were produced in an effort to amagamate the Cape, Natal, OFS and Transvaal issues to equal values and colours to facilitate handling: note that the ½ d., 1 d. and 2½ d. are in the UPU colours of green, red and blue respectively. A delightful and wonderful page.rnrnProvenance: 'Rectangular Issues', Spink, Sept 2007, lot 59.Ausruf : 1.500 CHFZuschlag : 2.400 CHF
