Franco-Prussian War 1870: Cover and card, both from Belgium to beseiged Paris; with entire letter on very thin pelure paper struck on despatch with OSTENDE cds (Oct 13) and endorsed in manuscript "Voie Aërostatique par Lille" where spheric Ballons were ready for re-use. Reverse with 'France / Ouest 3' cds in black (Oct 13) and framed 'PD' denoting full payment in lieu of an adhesive stamp. Readdressed to Calvados in gold-dusted ink with 'Paris à Caen' TPO cds (March 20, 1871) just a week before the Paris Commune, and charged '3' décimes to pay. Fascinating text: "Keratry enfin tombé des nues en Belgique..Arrivée de Gambetta à Tours..l désir d'avoir de vos nouvelles me fait confier ce mot à un ballon.." . This rare entire is twinned with a postcard endorsed 'Par Ballon Monté' from Gavre Flandre Orientale addressed to beseiged Paris franked by 1865 30 c. brown tied by dotted lozenge with 'Gand' cds adjacent (Nov 11) and 'France / Ouest 3' cds of the same day; with long cross-written message "Je viens d'envoyer à Tours une dépêche de 15 mots..le service des pigeons maintenant bien organisé pour envoyer des nouvelles à Paris..".
