1854/59: Perkins Bacon Archive sheet, with 20 Proof examples of the Garter 6 d. value, all with diagonally waxed corners to prevent re-use, arrayed in four coloumns of five for Trials to see whether the cancellations could be removed. The sheet with manuscript notations by Bacon: 'Pink No.1, Black No. 4, Blue No. 2, Drab No. 3' at top, with the lower four horizontal rows subjected to tests by various different bleaches tried including 'Chloride of Lime', 'Muratic Acid', Axolic Acid' and 'Liquified Potassium', each Proof with manuscript 'Fisher' accross the face of each Proof. Rowland Hill and the Post Office were obsessed by the possibility of Postal Fraud and attempted Trials to remove cancellations and ink in order to deflect any attempt at claiming Post Office revenue illegally. An extraordinary Trial page that would nestle neatly on an Exhibit page. A great rarity for the British Commonwealth collector.rnrnProvenance: Collection E. R.
