    1882: De La Rue proposal for the Perkins Bacon contract, with "Appendix above referred to" stating "NB This is a tracing of the design enclosed in our letter of the 19th Oct 1882" with absolutely beautiful hand-painted Essay in mauve & pale lilac headed ST. VINCENT REVENUE picked out in Chinese white, with value tablets below (17) with five values from 1 d. to 6 d. hand-painted in red, 1 s. to 10 s. values picked out in green and £1 to £10 values in mauve; second page with perforated printed Keyplate designs with blank country name and Duty Plate marked '2' showing hand-painted ST. VINCENT REVENUE and ONE POUND in purple, '3' the same but hand-painted ST VINCENT and ONE POUND in purple with manuscript notation "This is an exact copy of the design for a revenue stamp given on the Appendix to our letter of the 29th June '82", with below '4' a further gorgeous hand-painted design on tracing paper in mauve and purple with ST. VINCENT POSTAGE AND REVENUE in Chinese white; third page headed "Appendix B" showing printed Keyplate designs with blank country name and Duty Plate marked '1' with hand-painted ST. VINCENT POSTAGE and HALFPENNY in green, and '2' with hand-painted ST. VINCENT REVENUE and FIVE SHILLINGS in purple. Sold together with the original three page copy letter from De La Rue to the Crown Agents in Downing Street dated November 3, 1882 discussing the use of both Postage and Revenue stamps to be used for either purpose stating that if so a saving of £100 could be made on the costs of the Die and the Plate, but suggesting that confusion will arise in the Post Office. A wonderful and historical group, unfortunately sold by RL prior to copies being made available for interested philatelists and thus not pictured in "The De La Rue Collection".rnProvenance: RL, Bermuda, 3 Dec 1976, lots 828 and 829.
