    Austrian Levant Rates 1852 (Sept 23): Unpaid Entire letter from Salonica to Trieste struck with crisp two line "SALONICH / 23. SEPTEMBRE" datestamp (Tchilinghirian fig. 594) in black. Reverse with Semlin Quarantine handstamp, Semlin transit and Trieste arrival (Oct 5) cds's. Charged with '21' kreuzer upon arrival, the entire opens well for display. Illustrated in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 266 and in the Ferchenbauer handbook part IV on page 526. rnNote: The Levant rates were independent from the way of transportation, be it via the sea or overland. The receiver of this cover had to pay 21 kreuzer CM in total, 12 kreuzer for the overland transport to Semlin, but here in addition 9 kreuzer for third rayon tariff within Austria.
