  • Losnr. : 7557 Österreich. Levante

Trieste Rate Handstamps 1867: Unpaid Letter sheet from Alexandria to Frankfurt endorsed "via Trieste", struck with clear "ALEXANDRIEN 6 / 3" cds in blue (Tranmer fig. 5), two strikes of '15' rate handstamps (van der Linden 3152) alongside, reverse with Frankfurt distribution datestamp (10/3). An attractive usage, illustrated in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 228. rnNote: In the second half of the 1850s, numeral rate handstamps were introduced primarily in Trieste to simplify the handling of the large volume of unpaid or underpaid incoming mail from the Levant. They were in kreuzer, silbergroschen and piaster currency depending on the destination of the charged item. In this case 15 kr. were charged for the Lloyd part from Egypt and 15 kr. for the part of the journey within the German-Austrian Postal Union.
