    Ballon Monté No. 2 1870 (Sept 24): Entire letter to Ryde, Isle of Wight; franked by 1863/67 30 c. brown, tied by Paris Star 35 with 'Paris / Ministère des Finances' datestamp (Sept 24, 3rrd levée) alongside in black and framed 'PD' in red. Probably flown from beseiged Paris on the Ballon "La Ville de Florence" with 'Ryde' backstamp (Oct 18). Faults but with interesting content and no 'Ballon' endorsement although the thin paper is utilised - letter states "Mr. Woodhouse has kindly promised to put this letter in the Embassy letter-bag, I hope you will receive it...". A rare destination Maury = € 2'500+.
