Wreck Mail 1887/88: 10 c. black on yellow, single example tied to 1892 cover to Vienna endorsed 'via New York' by Colon duplex in blue (Jan 13). Carried on the ill-fated North German Lloyd Steamer 'Eider' which sank off the Isle of Wight with much heroism displayed by the RNLI in saving the passengers and crew on board on January 31. The envelope struck with framed "Gehoben aus dem / geschetterten Schiff / "Eider" in violet with 'Franco' in black applied to denote payment. Reverse with New York transit cds (Jan 21) and Austrian P.O. Reseal label and arrival cds (March 9).
