    'Pisagua' 1868 (Oct): Great Britain 1867 2 s. pale blue, lettered HD, used on 1868 green envelope believed to be from Pisagua (Chile) to Colchester endorsed 'Paid' and 'via Panama' tied by the famous "D65" obliterator in black. Reverse with Colchester arrival datestamp (Oct 28) in black. Small envelope imperfections and tone spot but this is the sole recorded cover from Pisagua with a 2 s. adhesive, and, whilst further Great Britain stamps have been found with the "D65" obliterator only one further cover has come to light since 1953.     1865 (Jan 6): Entire letter from Tacna to Castillon, France endorsed 'via Panama', franked by uncancelled Peru 1862 Lecoq 1 d. pink on despatch (Scott 12), prepaid with with superb double arc ARICA datestamp (Jan 7) and equally fine "♚ / PAID / AT / ARICA" handstamp struck in red (unrecorded) and manuscript '11d.' in red. 'London / Paid' transit cds and oval 'PD' in red, thence via Calais (Feb 14) to Castillon. A splendid and very rare entire - the sole recorded usage of this Crown Circle struck in red.rnProvenance: Soler y Llach, Barcelona, 23 March 1994, lot 1407.

    1867 (Oct 6): Peru 1862 Lecoq 1 d. pink (Scott 12) paying internal postage on 1867 cover from Tacna to London care of two Forwarding Agents with oval cachet of "C. Eulert / Arica" at upper left (Oct 8) and the second in Philadelphia, USA, overlapped by Great Britain 1858/79 1 d. red, pl. 85, three vertical pairs, the upper four stamps tied by "C36" Arica obliterators, the lower pair also cancelled in transit at Panama with "C35" to prevent re-use with further 'Panama' single ring transit cds (Oct 21) alongside. 'N.Y Steamship / 10' charge mark for incoming Ship Letter applied on arrival (Oct 31). The letter without further markings and presumably sent on under separate cover. Faults to one adhesive at base and heavy vertical file fold affects another at top but 1d. red. plate 85 is not recorded used from Arica by Stanley Gibbons.     1872 (Nov 9): Great Britain 1864 1 d. red pl. 138 single example and 1 d. red pl. 141 with a single and strip of four used on 1872 envelope from Arica to Greenock, Scotland cancelled by poor strikes of the "C36" obliterator and by single circle ARICA datestamp, reverse of opened for display cover showing 1858/69 2 d. blue pl. 13 in a block of six, this last overlooked at Arica and cancelled by the "C38" obliterator of Callao with cds alongside (Nov 14). The adhesives with minor scuffs and the block with one stamp with closed tear but a rare and most unusual cover.

    1865 (Sept 7): Peru 1862 Lecoq 1 d. pink (Scott 12) tied to cover front to Mainz, Germany by 'Arica' datestamp in black (Sept 7) used in combination with Great Britain 1864 1 d. red pl. 95, 1862 4 d. vermilion, hairlines, and 1865 1 s. green pl. 4 in a horizontal pair all tied by three bold strikes of the "C36" obliterator with double arc 'Arica' datestamps adjacent in black. 'London / Paid' cds (Oct 13) and oval 'PD' in red and thence via Aachen to Mainz. Edge wear at base but a rare usage of these adhesives - both the 1 d. red pl. 95 and the 4 d. vermilion are unlisted by Stanley Gibbons used in Arica, thus a proving piece.

    1879 (Feb 26): Cover from Lima to Hamburg endorsed 'via Panama, England' to Hamburg franked by Peru 1874 20 c. brown-red (Scott 27) tied by 'Lima / Principal' cds (Feb 26) in black, used in combination with Great Britain 1876 4 d. sage-green pl. 16, three examples, cancelled by three strikes of the "C38" obliterator with 'Callao' British P.O. cds on reverse (Feb 26). Reverse with London transit (March 29) and Hamburg arrival over unusual 'Mercantile Bank of Peru' label. Found to be double weight upon arrival and struck with 'T' marking and charged '160' pfennigs due to pay in blue crayon.     1876 (Sept 28): Combination usage, an entire letter from Callao bearing Peru diagonally bisected 1868 1 p. yellow (Scott 15a = $ 1'100) paying internal rate with Great Britain 1870 ½ d. rose-red pl 5, 1873 3 d. rose pl. 19, 1865  4 d. vermilion pl. 14 and 1873 1 s. green pl. 12 all tied by four strikes of the "C38" obliterator with 'Callao' despatch cds on reverse (Sept 28) in black. 'London / Paid' transit on front in red (Oct 30). Minor bends but a splendid and extremely rare 'five colour' franking - the unique example of the 1868 1 peseta used on a combination cover (although there is a piece with two 2 s. blue), see Bargholtz & Potel "Peru-GB Combination Frankings", section D, page 33.     1871 (July 27): Combination cover from Lima to Hamburg, Germany endorsed 'via Panama & Southampton' franked for internal rate with Peru 1868 Lecoq 1 d. green (Scott 14) cancelled by Lima cds in black and Great Britain 1864 1 d. red pl. 118 and 1865 4 d. vermilion pl. 11 with a single, a horizontal pair and a block of four utilised for 1/8d. rate, tied by six strikes of the "C38" obliterator with 'Callao' despatch cds (July 27) on reverse. 'London / Paid' and circular 'PD' in red (Aug 26) and reverse with Hamburg arrival. Italy franked by Peru 1866/67 Llama 20 c. brown diagonally bisected for internal single rate (Scott 18a) and Great Britain 1858/69 2 d. blue pl.15, defective 1874 6 d. grey pl. 15 and 1 s. green pl. 12 all tied by three strikes of the "C38" obliterator. 'Callao' cds of despatch on reverse (Oct 28) with Sori arrival cds (Dec 1) alongside. File folds but a scarce - ½ d. overpaid for the UPU rate and an unusual 'four colour' franking.rn

'London / Paid' and oval 'PD' in red (June 13) and reverse with Hamburg arrival. Faults but nevertheless a spectacular and rare usage to an uncommon destination.

    1877 (Oct 12): Combination cover from Callao to Florence, Italy endorsed 'via Panama' franked by Peru 1875/76 10 c. green in a horizontal strip of three (Scott 25) with Great Britain 1877 4 d. sage-green pl. 16 and 1876 8 d. orange in an irregular strip of three, all tied by five strikes of the "C38" obliterator. Struck with rare usage of the "INSUFFICIENTLY / + / PREPAID" handstamp in red on despatch and marked '11d.' to pay in manuscript. Reverse with 'Callao' despatch cds (Oct 12), London transit cds (Nov 12) where 'T' marking added and Firenze arrival (Nov 15) and taxed with 1870 Postage Due 60 c. in a vertical strip of three. Some imperfections incl. repair at top to one 8 d. adhesive but both the GB stamps are rare on letter from Callao. A dramatic and most appealing cover. Cert. No.3" on reverse (Salles fig. 1401) in black (April 1), carried from Colon by Steamer "Washington" with St. Nazaire entry marking in red (April 25) and charged with handstruck '30' décimes due. YORK / STEAMSHIP" datestamps (Nov) in black. Obverse bears three line dated PANAMA / TRANSIT (Oct 20) in black and erroneous "Due 35" (cents) in black. Sensibly opened for Exhibit display, despite imperfections a marvellous and extremely rare combination usage. Cert.     1881 (Feb): Sailor's concessionary rate cover to Eye, Suffolk with Great Britain 1864/79 1 d. red pl. 192 in a horizontal pair tied to defective but extraordinary hand-painted envelope showing a delightful illustration of the "HMS Turquoise at Coquimbo, Chile" (altered to "Callao" in manuscript) endorsed "From Thomas Moss" and countersigned by his Commanding Officer 'C.J. Turner' at lower left, the adhesives tied by light "PANAMA / C35" duplex in black. Reverse with Eye arrival cds (March 14). Charming and of great rarity.

    1879 (March 14): Cover from Iquique to Bordeaux franked by Peru 1874 10 c. green (Scott 25) for internal tariff, alongside Great Britain 1873 1 s. green pl. 13 sharing light but clear "D87" obliterator with "IQUIQUE / PERU" datestamp below (March 14, code A). Circular PANAMA / TRANSIT datestamp at left in black (March 29) overstruck by octagonal French Paquebot "PANAMA / PAQ. FR. A No. 3" in black (Salles fig. 1413) and carried from Colon on the "Washington" (April 1) with Bordeaux arrival (April 25) on reverse.
