    1840: 1 d. black, Plate 1a, lettered LH, a used example with good to large margins all round, tied to 1840 cover endorsed "O.H.M.S." and mailed from Edinburgh to Peebles, neatly tied by crisp red Maltese Cross. Flap states that the letter was from the 'Crown Agent' in Edinburgh (June 3), with "Peebles" double arc cds of receipt in red (June 4) on reverse. Some file folds not affecting the adhesive or appearance, a fine and unusual cover, the earliest O.H.M.S. usage with a Penny Black by us. Gi AS2 = £ 1'000 (for a normal cover).rnNote: The "VR" 1 d. black was intended for a usage such as the above letter.rnNote: John Bathgate (1809-1886) was town clerk in Peebles and the principal promoter of the Peebles Railway.
