    1861: Washington 10 c. yellow-green, used on cover from Washington to Guatemala, dated 19 March 1862, tied by Washington DC circular datestamp in black dated 20 March, with charge mark "2" in blue alongside. The envelope is addressed to "Hon. E. D. Crosby" (Elisha Oscar Crosby) and contains an extensive letter, headed up "Washington March 19th, 1862", contains interesting historical content relating to President Abraham Lincoln; ".....Mr. Lincoln will get the nomination at the Republican Convention which assembles in Blatimore in June or I will confess that I am politically blind. 13 State Legislators have already passed resolutions favouring his re-election and think they express the voice of the people, and if nominated his election is a certainty, beyond all question. Which is more than can be said for any other aspirant...."; the two page handwritten letter is signed; 'Sam' N. Hilton'; a wonderful snapshot into US politics during the American Civil War period.
