Lot# 1556 - Auction 244-249

  • Lot# : 1556 Great Britain

1840 (May 15): Mulready 1 d. black letter-sheet, stereo A57, used from Folkestone to London, cancelled by red Maltese Cross with reverse showing 'Folkestone' double arc cds in black and London arrival cds (May 15) in red. Somewhat creased but a fascinating letter inside "Folkestone May 14, 1840...I was charged £4-13s-10d. for the Postage Stamps you got for me, and are to be had for £4-7-0d. I cannot afford to give 6s/10d. away so I have written to the person you got them of about it, but he does not answer. You will oblige me by seeing him to take them again if he will not allow the difference. I did not expect you intended to be as careless of my money as that...6/10d. is a fruity sum, enough to buy mail for my family for a fortnight..". An interesting early May Date usage.
