    1849 (January 3): Entire letter endorsed 'Franco' at upper left, mailed from Paris to L'Argentière, Ardèche franked by January 1, 1849 Cérès 20 c. black on yellowish, a fine example with large margins all round, tied by 'PARIS / 60 / JANV. 3. 49' circular datestamp struck in blue with additional strike at left. Reverse with some docketing and arrival datestamp (Jan 6) in black. A rare early usage of the stamp (3rd day) and cancellation (2nd day).     1849 (April 4): Entire letter from Lezay to Poitiers with front of cover showing LEZAY datestamp of despatch in black and struck in error with handstamped '2' décimes charge marking. The 1849 Cérès 20 c. black on yellowish found to be applied on reverse as a seal to the letter, the Postmaster annulled the '2' handstamp with both black and red impressions of the grill postmark, cancelling the adhesive in red. The stamp with minor closed tear at upper left presumably achieved on opening the letter, otherwise in immaculate condition. A rare and most attractive entire that displays well. Certs. Calves (2008) and Brun (2014).

    1861 (June): Entire letter from Marseille to New Orleans franked by 1853/60 80 c. carmine tied by petit chiffres in black with Marseille cds alongside (June 14); thence to New York with red 'New York Paid 15' datestamp (July 2). The cover could not be forwarded due to the Civil War (Confederate New Orleans did not fall to the Union forces under Farragut until April 1862) and was handstamped on reverse RENVOYÉ EN FRANCE / SANS INDICATION / DE LA CAUSE DE REBUT in blue with handstruck '9' décimes charge marking in red on front. An extraordinary cover and the first example of this handstamp this describer has seen.
