Reverse with annotation of sender and manuscript 'Setiembre 25 de 1860'. One or two stamps with shaved margins at top or at base but of no great significance on a multiple of this size on letter.     Note: Whilst there was perhaps no shortage of the 1 dinero green at this date, it is probable that the rate reduction to 5 centavos for the Railway route from Lima to Callao was adopted by the Railway Company who cancelled this cover without the Post Office's knowledge.     10 c. vermilion, used on 1874 entire letter from Lima to Bordeaux, France tied by Lima cds (May 13) in black. Thence via British P.O. in Callao with the rate to Panama prepaid with Great Britain 1873/80 6 d. grey pl. 13 (Gi. Z46) tied by bold "C38" obliterator in black. Reverse with Callao datestamp (May 14) and London transit cds (June 12) where framed 'GB / 1F 90c.' accountancy marking was applied. Charged due with '15' décimes handstruck in black on arrival. A fresh and fine entire of great scarcity.  Cert. RPS (1957).

    10 c. vermilion and 20 c. brown used on 1874 Judicial cover from Cajatambo to Huaraz, each tied by oval framed CAJATAMBO handstamps struck in red. Manuscript at top 'Deficit (10 ctvs)' and deleted with 'abonado' alongside. Reverse with manuscript notation of sender dated 'Junio 3, 1874'. Fresh and very fine, a most unusual and attractive usage.

    20 c. brown, diagonally bisected on large part cover from Lima to Bordeaux, France endorsed 'via Panama and Southampton', tied by both 'Lima-Pral' datestamp and by Calais entry marking. Reverse flap with British P.O.'Callao' datestamp (Sept 28), London transit (Oct 30) cds. Struck with 'T/1-70' in black and by handstruck '23' décimes charge marking on arrival. Despite imperfections, a rare usage Scott = $ 675.

    20 c. brown, a horizontal pair used on 1878 registered cover from Huancavelica to Lima cancelled by Huancavelica cds, five leaved handstamp and framed CERTIFICACION at left. Reverse with docketing of sender (Jan 2 and, erroneously, 1877) and signed for as receipt inside the cover with 'Lima / Distrito' cds in blue (Jan 14, 1878). Slight edge faults due to the registration method but a fine and very rare usage.

    20 c. brown used in combination with 1876 10 c. green and diagonally bisected 10 c. green on 1876 cover to Genova, Italy endorsed at top 'via la Alemania via Inglaterra' and tied by 'Lima-Principal' datestamps (Dec 13) in black. Some ageing on perforations but a remarkable cover carried at 34 centavos rate: the 1876 10 c. bisect not being an authorised usage. Reverse confirming the route with 'Verviers/Coeln' T.P.O. (Jan 13) in black and Genova arrival cds (Jan 15). A rare and delightful franking. Cert. Moorhouse (2013).

    Note: The rate via Hamburg to Italy was 29 centavos (Convention of March 1, 1875). This cover travelled via Cologne and should have been charged 34 centavos and is thus correctly franked but 1 centavo overpaid.

    5 c. pale red, used example with touched to large margins all round, embossing split not noticeable from front, cancelled by superb strike of CHORILLOS-M datestamp clearly dated 29-AGO-70 in blue. A rare usage.

    Note: All catalogues, Scott, Stanley Gibbons, Michel and Yvert perpetually get the date of issue of the 'Trencito' wrong. It was believed by Julio Lugon to have been issued in April 1870, possibly on April 13, certainly the stamps were printed in that month and year. Covers have been verified and certified by acknowledged experts in the field as used in 1870 for some time.
