    1882: De La Rue Essay for the proposed new issue (on 3rd May 1882 De La Rue wrote to the Crown Agents saying that the Perkins Bacon plates were "so worn as to render printing therefrom exceedingly difficult", De La Rue suggesting a surface printed design of which two hand-painted examples were produced - one enclosed with the letter, the other (ex Marriott & 'Scarborough') being retained with the DLR records. rnrnEssay for the 1 d. design as accepted, entirely hand-painted in rose-red and carmine with the country legend picked out in Chinese white, stamp size on brown tracing paper handstamp "3 MAY 82" at top and pencil notation in capital letters "This sketch is drawn by hand and but roughly represents the effect which should be obtained in a finished stamp". Illustrated in "The De La Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 6386. Lovely and of great rarity.
