    Ballon monté 1870 (Oct. 27): Entire letter carried on board of balloon no. 21 'Le Colonel Charras' to a Prisoner of War in Sedan, franked with Napoléon laureated 20 c. blue type II and Siège 10 c. bistre, tied by star '2' with Paris St. Lazare cds and framed "P.P." in violet alongside. The entire was franked with 30 centimes erronously for Belgium, but taxed upon arrival. Both stamps were glued around the corner of the entire, the resulting fold was ironed out, some water stains and acid ink, nevertheless a most interesting combination of a ballon monté and prisoner of war mail.

    Ballon monté 1870 (Nov. 22): Entire letter carried on board of balloon no. 33 'La Ville d'Orleans' to Vannes, franked with Siège 20 c. blue, tied by star '2' with Paris St. Lazare cds alongside, reverse with French Fieldpost cachet "ARMÉE - 2ème DIVISION - 1ère BRIGADE - LE COLONEL" in blue, Nantes transit (Dec. 9) and Vannes arrival cds (Dec. 10) Maury = € 700+.rnNote: The 'Ville d'Orleans' had one of the most fascinating journeys among all ballons montés which explains two weeks for the way to the addressee. Within 15 hours it made a journey of about 1200 km from Paris to Lifjell in Norway. Mailbags were transported along the Norvegian coast to Mandal, via ship to Gravesend in the United Kingdom and via London to Tours.

Signed Goebel Maury = € 850.rnNote: The 'Ville de Paris' was captured by German authorities after landing nearby Sinn in Hessen-Nassau. The mail was given to the German postal system and forwarded to the addressees. This is another Ballon monté to the United Kingdom which is overfranked by 10 centimes as the public seemed not to have noticed the rate decrease from 40 to 30 centimes on July 1st, 1870.

Signed Calves.rnNote: Entire written on the last day of the siege and posted on the day the armistice came into effect. It was intended for mailing with a balloon but sent overland belonging to the well-known correspondence of Mr. Hardon to his wife at the island of Jersey. His writing says: "Les journeaux de ce matin, sans donner encore des details; disent qu'a partir de minuit l'ordre a été donné de toutes parts pour faire cesser les feux. Plus un coup de canon, plus un coup de fusil; il y a donc armistice, au plutot c'est la paix. Quelle stupidité que la guerre!".

Front struck with Shipmail's octogonal datestamp "BUENOS-AYRES PAQ. FR. J N°3 10 MAI 1874" as well as framed PD in red. Reverse with Bordeaux Cette ambulant and Clermont-L'Herault transit and Aniane arrival (June 7, 1874) cds's. The sender had to pay 5 centavos for the inland part of the journey and twice 1 franc for the double rate mailing to France. A fresh entire with an attractive two country combination franking. Front with strikes of Shipmail's octogonal datestamps "VERA CRUZ PAQ. FR. B N° 4" 18 MAI 75" (Salles vol. IV p. 95) and "MEXIQUE 1" as well as framed "P.P." in black and '3' reales due in Cuba. Reverse with Habana arrival cds (May 21, 1875). Minor perforation toning and file fold well away from the stamps, nevertheless an amazing piece of postal history from Martinez correspondence. Cert. Despatched in Hue, the seat of the Annamese Emperor, presumably by Paul-Louis-Félix Philastre (1837-1902), a French colonial administrator and diplomat. Philastre arrived in Cochinchina for the first time in 1861. In 1873, he played an important role in mediating between the French colonial authorities in Annam and the royal court in Huế. In 1874, Philastre negotiated the Second Treaty of Saigon with the Annamese court.

The stamp is tied by a red MC, the Loughborogh despatch mark is dated 17 August 1840. A receiving mark was applied in London the following day. The letter and contents would probably have conveyed a romantic message, which was sent locally to Southwark. A straight line cachet Borough is on the reverse. The stamps are tied by London SP 13 Duplex WC 3. Both 1d. stamps show the very unusual fancy perfin E.R.L. with a triangle. On the back part of the flap is missing but a very attractive display item with a good destination.

    1898: 2 1/2d. purple/blue, Jubilee Issue on a delightful water colour hand painted envelope from Perth/Scotland to Saint Lucia. The image is depicting a young lady straddling a wall, where the address is ingeniously incorporated into the design. This romantic drawing was made by Captain, later Colonel Hugh Rose of the Black Watch. This gem from the famous King-Harman correspondence would grace any collection. A receiving mark St. Lucia is on the back of the envelope.

    Peru 1879: 6d. grey, plate 16, lettered EB, used on cover in delightful mixed franking with Peru 1874 issue 10 Centavos green from IQUIQUE via Callao and London to Lyon. The letter was posted on 17. January and the letter was taxed 50 Centavos, made Callao on 22nd of the same month, where the British stamp was cancelled with the C38 obliterator. The journey was completed on March 1 in Lyon, where the letter was again taxed with 10 Decime. A very fine and rare cover, which was sent by the French Vice Consulate in Iquique. Cert. Enzo Diena.
