    French Post Office 1862/63: France 10 c. bistre, two horizontal pairs used on 1867 cover from Galatz to Messina, Sicily tied by bold strikes of "5085" gros chiffres struck in blue with pearled GALATZ / MOLDAVIE cds below (April 27). Framed 'PD' at left also in blue but deleted by the Postmaster as underpaid to this destination and substituted by 'Affranchisement / Insuffisant' struck in red with '5' décimes due to pay in manuscript. Reverse with French P.O. 'Constantinople / Turquie' transit (April 30) and Messina arrival (May 5) datestamp in black.     Russian P.O.'s in Romania: Large part letter despatched at the Russian P.O. in Jassy, reverse with cyrillic "YASSY 1854 13 MAR" cds (Dobin 63-2-05.1.08, rated 7) with floral design. A late usage of this datestamp, which Dobin describes only up to 1853. In July 1854 Russian troops had to leave the United Principalities which were conquered consecutively by Austrian neutral 'peacekeeping' forces.

Carried by DDSG steamer in the October 1866 rate with 10 kr./so. between Austria and the Principalities as well as Albania. Manuscript rates '1.35+2.10' (piastres 4.05 = 21 kr.) and '6' (kreuzer) for Hermannstadt - Bucharest. Scarce cover that opens well for display.

    1913: Two letters, written from Rochefort, each signed at base by Pierre LOTI (1850-1923), French Naval Officer and writer of 'Madame Chrysanthème', a novel of Japanese manners that is a precursor to Madame Butterfly and Miss Saigon, Le Roman d'un enfant (The Story of a Child), a somewhat fictionalized recollection of Loti's childhood that would greatly influence Marcel Proust; Ramuntcho (1897), The Last Days of Peking (1902); in later years he was a fervent pro-Ottoman supporter during the Balkan Wars; also a correspondence 1812/13 and 1830/42 from Rev. William Goddell to USA either internal and with letters from Malta to USA from 1830 with 3 entires via Boston; from 1831/40 he was working as a Missionary in Constantinople with 9 entires at a variety of rates to USA.
