    Lot# : 743 Ionian Islands

Ionian Islands 1859: (½ d.) orange, no wmk., an unused block of twenty-five (5 x 5) from the sheet of 120 subjects, ample to large margins all round, third stamp with tiny scuff mark on tiara, otherwise superb and very fresh, large part og. with the majority unmounted og. A delightful and extremely scarce multiple Gi = £ 3'500+.rnrnNote: There were 50'000 examples printed of each value. The reason that the ½ d. value is very much the scarcest is said to be that William Lincoln, the first stamp dealer to open a shop in London, circa 1856, later utilised the ½ d. value in sheets as decorative wall-paper for his London office when he moved from his original shop in Holborn to Holles Street, Oxford Circus, London.

1861. Cancelled Stamps for Rowland Hill’s nephew Ormond HillrnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the "specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property. Nevertheless, the case destroyed Perkins Bacon as future printers for the Crown Agents.rnFrom Peter Jaffe in "Cancelled by Perkins Bacon“, published for Spink & Son Ltd by James Bendon Ltd. 1857 (January): Richardson printing, 1 d. dull orange on white paper, wmk. Large Star, the famous "Dwarf" print, with complete watermark and large margins on three sides and trace of right hand margin at upper right, small thin mentioned for accuracy, the design measuring 18 mm. x 18 mm. (against 19 mm. x 25.5 mm. for the 'normal' stamp), this extraordinarily crushed but complete example was probably caused by an interruption in the printing process. The stamp is cancelled by the oval "NSW" New South Wales duplex in black (introduced in 1858), as is the only other example recorded, presently in the Tapling Collection in the British Library in London, an enlarged colour copy of which accompanies the lot. The Tapling example is in the same shade and both stamps probably emanated from the same cover and were later plated by Grace Gordon Kaye as coming from Row 15, positions 1 and 2. Unique in private hands and one of the most famous of all Classic Stamp varieties and the most famous stamp of New Zealand. Cert. RPSL (1941), BPA (2019).rnrnNote: This stamp was initially found by Robson Lowe and the RPSL certificate of 7 April 1941 attributes it to the Davies printing of 1862. Much research and comparative study has since taken place and we believe that the stamp is from a Richardson printing. The stamp then appears to have been 'lost' in a collection as the late Derek M. Bolton always claimed (over many lunches with this describer) that he found it in a 'mixed lot' of New Zealand. However, the stamp was later the subject of two articles in the 'Philatelist' in 1971 by Grace Gordon Kaye and was eventually sold at auction through London Stamp Exchange on 8 March 1974, as lot 328.
