    Mail from Greek Offices in the Levant 1868: Extraordinary cover at seven times the 45 lepta rate by French ship, franked at 315 lepta and mailed from Constantinople to Athens bearing 1862/67 5 l. green, 10 l. bright orange on blued, 20 l. blue, 40 l. dull mauve on grey-blue and three 80 l. carmine all tied by dotted '95' numeral handstamps with 'Constantinople' cds of despatch (Feb 28) above and oval Greek PD alongside. Reverse with Piraeus transit cds (March 1). Refolded to improve appearance but a splendid and very rare five colour franking, the sole known usage of a seven times rate cover from Constantinople's Greek Post Office. The 25 c. and Airmail 50 c. blocks each with one stamp showing "Overprint Sideways" variety, the 50 c. block with corner stamp showing "Inverted Overprint" variety; largely fresh and fine multiples, occasional tone spot on large part and mostly unmounted original gum.     Mail from Austria to Greece 1861: Cover from Trieste sent unpaid and endorsed 'per Vapore Austriaco' to Calamata, franked by wonderful 1861 Paris printing 5 l. green on greenish, merest bend from file fold, 10 l. orange on blued, 20 l. blue on bluish and 40 l. lilac on blued, each with four large margins, tied on arrival by dotted '31' numeral of Calamata. Manuscript '3/15' on front (3 kr. for port fee in Trieste + 15 kr. for Lloyd ship rate) in blue ink on front and '75' in red crayon for the lepta amount to pay. Reverse with Athens cds (Oct 19, julian) and Calamata cds of receipt (Oct 22). A superb and extremely rare four colour Paris printing cover in brilliant condition, used in the first weeks of issue.     Mail from Austria to Greece 1861: Entire letter mailed unpaid from Vienna to Patras, endorsed 'Col Vapore' at top, struck with 'Wien' despatch cds in black (Oct 24), thence carried by Lloyd steamer from Trieste to Patras, with manuscript '15/15' in blue ink (Austrian internal rate 15 kr. + Lloyd ship fee 15 kr.) and further red crayon '110' (lepta) for amount due = 90 lepta + 20 lepta for internal delivery. Franked by 1861 Paris printing 10 l. orange on blued, 20 l. blue and 80 l. carmine on rose, all with good margins, tied by dotted '9' numeral of Patras on arrival (Oct 21, julian). Reverse with Triest transit, Athens cds (Oct 19) and Patras cds. File fold well away from the adhesives, a fine and rare first issue franking used in the first weeks of issue.     Mail from the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg via Austria and Austria Lloyd 1862: Entire letter from Ronneburg, Saxony-Altenburg to Syros, Greece forwarded privately to Trieste, where mailed unpaid with 'Triest' cds (Feb 7) in black and manuscript '3/15' rate marking in blue ink applied (3 kr. local rate + 15 kr. Lloyd ship fee); franked on arrival with remarkable usage of 1861 Paris printing 20 l. blue in a horizontal strip of three, overlapped by First Athens printing 5 l. deep yellow green on greenish in a vertical strip of three, closed tear, all tied by dotted '67' numeral in black. Rubbed '75' (lepta) in manuscript red crayon on front (rate of 18 kr. = 55 lepta + 20 lepta for internal delivery) and reverse with Syros cds (Feb 2, julian) of receipt. The letter sheet with faults but a rare and most unusual entire. Signed Tseriotis.

    Mail from Russia to Greece 1866: Entire letter at double rate from Taganrog to Syros, Greece franked by Russia 1858 30 kop. carmine & green, perf. 12½ (2) tied by Taganrog cds's of despatch (Jan 1), prepaid 60 kopeks for transit to Constantinople. Odessa transit on front and circular FRANCO in black. Taxed on arrival with manuscript '115' (lepta) in red crayon (75 lepta for letter above 15 grams + internal double rate of 40 lepta) with 1862/67 5 l. green on greenish, 10 l. deep orange on blued, 20 l. deep blue and 80 l. carmine all tied by 'Syros' datestamps (Jan 16).     Underpaid Mail from Austria to Greece 1866: Cover from Trieste to Corfu franked by Austria 1863 10 kr. blue, perf. 9½, a few short perfs., tied by oval 'Triest' datestamps on despatch (Aug 23), underpaid 5 kreuzer and struck with AFFRANCATURA / INSUFFICIENTE in black with manuscript '5' in blue (kr.) below. Franked on arrival with 1862/67 5 l. green, 10 l. deep orange on very blued paper and 20 l. blue on bluish all tied by 'Kerkyra' datestamps (Aug 11, julian). An interesting method of adjusting the amount due with the original franking taken into consideration (10 kr. = 30 lepta, charged due 35 lepta for missing 5 kr. = 15 lepta), plus internal postage of 20 lepta. Slitted for disinfection on arrival in Corfu against Cholera. A few imperfections including vertical file fold through 20 lepta but a generally fine and extremely rare cover. Reverse with Syros (Oct 25), Athens (Oct 26) and Patras (Oct 28) datestamps.     Mail from Italian P.O. in Tunis to Greece via Italian Paquebot 1873: Cover, one side flap missing, sent unpaid from Tunis to Corfu struck on despatch with 'Tunisi / Poste Italiane' datestamp in black (July 30) and italic 'coi Postali Italiani' alongside. Franked on arrival with 1872/75 5 l. green on greenish, 20 l. deep blue and 40 l. dull mauve on blued all tied by dotted '106' numeral with, on reverse, Cagliari and Brindisi transit cds's and Kerkyra arrival (July 23, julian), where disinfected with slits against Cholera. Hinged on disinfection slit on front panel but a scarce franking, especially so on a letter from Tunis, carried at single rate under the Greek / Italian Convention of 1864.     Mail from Belgium to Greece 1874: Cover from Antwerp to Syros, Greece sent unpaid and endorsed 'voie d'Allemagne par Trieste', struck with 'Anvers' cds (Dec 10) and framed NON AFFRANCHI on despatch in black. Franked on arrival in Syros with 1872/75 three margined 20 l. deep blue and horizontal pair of 40 l. bistre on blued paper tied by dotted '67' numeral handstamps. Reverse with 'Verviers / Coeln' TPO, Triest oval transit (Dec 13) and Syra cds (Dec 11, julian). A remarkable cover travelling on an unusual route - the obvious and much quicker transit point would have been Brindisi at this date. Rare. Illustrated in 'Les Tarifs Helléniques' on page 53.
