    1784 (March 2): Entire lettersheet from Fredericktown / Missouri to Hohenklingen in Württemberg Germany. Early emigrant letter written in German back home: "....dass ich soll wieder eine Antwort zuschicken, wir sind alle noch bey guter Gesundheit..." (... that I should send a reply again, we are all still in good health....). Private 18th century trans-atlantic letters are rare.

    1792: 'BOSTON MAY 22' handstamp in black on entire lettersheet written at Bilbao (Jan.12 / Feb.19) and addressed to Mr. Moses Brown, Newburryport (MA), concerning a bill of Loading, on reverse with forwarder marking: "Boston 18. May 1792 - Received, forwarded by your hum' Serv': Herman Brimmer". Fine and scarce.

    1847: USA Franklin 5 c. pale orange red-brown on blued paper, a fine example paying internal rate with large margins all round, used on 11 Feb 1851 entire letter from Boston to Avize, Marne, France lightly tied by black grid, endorsed "per Steamer Canada via Liverpool", with London transit cds in red on reverse (Feb 24) and struck there with framed "COLONIES / &c ART 13" in red. The adhesive also tied by 'Angl. / Calais' entry marking (Feb 25) in red and charged '15' décimes handstruck due upon receipt. A delightful and rare Transatlantic usage.     1867: 30 c. orange, with grill, used on 1869 cover from New York to Paris endorsed "pr. Russia, French Mail", tied by bold strike of circular segmented cork handstamp in black. "NEW YORK / PAID 12" cds of despatch and red 'PD' with Calais entry marking (Jan. 17) in red. Slight soiling but a very rare stamp on letter Scott = $ 2'000.

    1882: Garfield 5 c. brown, a used example on Wells Fargo imprinted 15 c. orange postal stationery envelope sent registered from San Francisco to Potsdam, Prussia cancelled by segmented cork handstamps in black with four line San Francisco despatch in blue (12 April, 1882). Reverse with New York transit (April 21) and New York transit registration label and Potsdam arrival (May 4). Some overall aging but a very rare usage.

    1893 (Jan.-March): Columbian Exposition Issue, the complete used set sixteen values, all cancelled by matching central strikes of  "NEW YORK / REG." oval handstamps in black. The set with large part original gum and some values with small gum skips, the 1 c. with crease, 3 c. with corner bend, 6 c. with two blunted perfs. and $ 3 with central small thin, nevertheless a most attractive and rare matched set Scott = $ 4'750+.rn

    Airship 'R34' Transatlantic flight 1919 (July 9): WAR DEPARTMENT envelope with enclosed letter sent by 'Lieut. Thornton T. Perry - Hazelhurst Field Mineola, LI-NY USA' with airship 'R34' back to England, endorsed 'Via Air R-34 Special' in manuscript, franked with 5 c. tied by "Hemstead N.Y. Jul 9" duplex postmarks, "London R 34. 13 JY 19" special arrival postmark to "Lincoln 14 JY 19". Included typewritten letter, headed HEADQUARTERS HAZELHURST FIELD Long Island, N.Y., in very fine condition. The return journey 10 to 13 July took 75 hours, only very few mail carried on board.     Airship 'R34' Transatlantic flight 1919 (July 2 - 13): Fine assembly of documents (3) and original photos (9) relating to Airship R34, including 1919 (Oct. 7th) handwritten letter signed by Major G. Herbert Scott Captain of  R34 on its Atlantic crossing together with his permanent pass for 'East Fortune' Royal Naval Air Station 1918/19, Menue card of a Royal Aero Club Banquet to Brig. Gen. E.M Maitland (Commanding Officer), Major G.H.Scott (Captain) and the Crew of H.M. Airship 'R34' held at Princes Restaurant Piccadilly, London July 23rd 1919.

    1930 (Jun. 24) Flight by "Southern Cross", Washington - San Francisco, THE LAST LAP OF AROUND - THE-WORLD FLIGHT -  Album page with two Illustred envelopes flown on the last lap, both franked with US airpost 5c and tied on arrival by 'San Francisco Jul. 7' machine cancel, first signed by President Hoover (only three covers believed to be signed by the President own hand), other signed by Kingsford Smith.     Confederate States 1863: USA 3 c. red postal stationery envelope overprinted "Confederate States of America" for the Post Office Finance Department, "Finance" deleted and countersigned by Chief of the Appointment Bureau "B.N.     1851/1960 Collection in six volumes with many earlies from the 1851 and 1857 issues including on cover. The 1857 issue contains three 12c stamps, as well as a run of lesser values including a 1c reprint in perf 12. There are a number of highly attractive cancellations (fancy cancels) including in red, also on the subsequent issues. The 1861 issue includes nine stamps with grill impressions, as well as a normal 90c Washington blue. 1893 Columbus contains a $1 orange as well as a $4 pink on piece. There is also a 15c green as additional franking on an AR letter to ZURICH. The condition is somewhat mixed but contains many very fine items. Later issues include two US Zeppelin flights.
