1884: "Rail Bond", a complete form (355 x 430 mm.) for the years 1884-1893, for public funding of President Barrios's scheme for the building of the "Northern Railroad" from Guatemala City to the Caribbean, stamped up with four examples of the unoverprinted 1 peso vermilion each handstamped PAGADO in violet (one stamp missing). The bond plan was for each completed form, the bearer would get 40 pesos worth of shares. However, President Barrios was killed fighting Salvadorean forces at the Battle of Chalchuapa in April 1885 and the project abandoned. The 1 peso was later utilised in 1886 for the surcharged 'Rail Bond' issue. An extraordinary survivor and rare.
