Signed at lower left by sender, Joseph Hume (1777-1855), the radical MP and mailed to Dawson Turner, banker, botanist and antiquarian. The Karl Louis Card Index records just 4 2 d. Mulreadies with the "No. 6" in Cross, of which this is undoubtedly the finest. Some file folds not affecting the adhesive or appearance, a fine and unusual cover, the earliest O.H.M.S. usage with a Penny Black by us.     1841: 1 d. red-brown on blued paper, black plate 11, lettered EC, an unused example with large margins all round, in a bright vibrant shade, fresh and very fine, superb large part og. An exceptional example of this rare stamp which is considerably scarcer in unused condition than the Black Plate 11 Gi AS74 = £ 8'500.rnNote: From the block of 13 unused stamps forwarded by Jas. Campbell to G.H. Backhoffner at the Polytechnic Institution on the 9th February 1841: "Sir, I have much pleasure in transmitting to you herewith, by permission of Colonel Maberly, two sheets of the Penny Labels, one black, the other red - and a third sheet Two. Penny blue, the whole free from the adhesive preparation". The three sheets were sent as Official notice had been taken of the blueing of the paper and it is presumed that the stamps were sent to Mr. Backhoffner to investigate the discolouration. The sheets were unlikely to have been sent without gum as this may have been a cause of the 'discolouration'. This was again split, with a pair DC-DD appearing in Grosvenor (16 April 2002, lot 366) and the block of six DE-DG / ED-EG in Bonhams (14 Feb 2002). From the auction descriptions above, 'EC' was always one of the faultless stamps in the original multiple.

    1841: 2 d. blue on blued paper, pl. 3, lettered QF, a used example with good even margins all round, the stamp with "Shifted Transfer" most noticeable on value tablet at base, tied to 1844 registered cover from Liverpool to Kendal by "466" numeral obliterator. Manuscript "Registered" and "1/-" in red ink alongside circular LIVERPOOL / PAID datestamp in red denoting that the registration fee was paid in cash.     1870 (April-May): Essay for the new ½ d. adhesive, printed in black on card (47 x 46 mm.) showing 'Grenada' Chalon Head and framed "½d." value tablet, with corner letter AE / EA and POSTAGE reading up at left and HALFPENNY reading down at right. Interestingly, the engraved impression is the size as adopted for the issued stamp with some scrolling around the frame being blacked out - the design of which was later placed near the corner letterings. Handstamped "6" at upper left and with manuscript "Messrs Perkins & Co" below in ink. An exceptional unadopted Essay: 19 different varieties were produced of which 6 are housed in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Perkins Bacon were instructed to show the value in figures at the sides.
