Clear despatch cds (Nov. 12, 1853), framed PD and VIA DI MARE, both in red alongside, reverse with Paris transit and arrival cds (Nov. 19). The obverse shows the endorsement "payé via Marseilles" and the pen cross denotes the full prepayment. A delightful cover for a first letter weight mailing up to 7.5 gr., fully prepaid to the Papal States, applicable between 1853 and 1866 Yvert = € 1'600 / Maury 6c = € 1'750rnrnNote: Addressee of this marvellous cover is Hugh Charles Clifford, 7th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (1790-1858), a British peer. On succeeding to his father's estates in 1831 he took his seat in the House of Lords. In his later years he lived chiefly in Italy, where he had a house near Tivoli. He died in Rome on 28 February 1858 from an injury.

    1867: Envelope with an insured value of 1'500 francs from Vienne to Elbeuf, bearing Napoléon laureated 30 c. brown in a horizontal pair, a fine multiple with vibrant colour and good perforation, tied by crisp Petits Chiffres du Gros Chiffres '4199' numeral lozenge, clear despatch cds (Feb. 9, 1870) and CHARGÉ in red alongside. Reverse with timbre indicatif de chargement, ambulant and arrival cds's of the next day. Some folds and some corner wear not affecting stamps and postmarks, an interesting and rare usage.rnrnNote: In the value letter rate of July 1859, in use until May 1870, postage and a fixed rate of 20 centimes were franked with stamps, leading to the 60 c. franking for this double rate item. The insured value fee of 10 c. for each 100 fr. insured, in this case 150 c., could be paid in cash, a procedure which was changed for the June 1870 tariff.

Horizontal file fold and one nibbed perf., nevertheless an interesting item correctly franked for the 1 fr. rate to the West Indies.

Reverse with timbre indicatif de chargement, ambulant Belfort à Paris and arrival cds's of the next day. Two punch holes well away from the stamps, sensibly replaced, nevertheless a desirable four colour franking with 'pre-war' issues from the period before the Cérès 1872 stamps became available.
