There was an American missionary school since the early 1850s from where many correspondence to Europe and the USA originated. Elazig was situated on the main Basra - Istanbul route in 1871 which explains the transit handstamp. This cover shows the correct franking for the Turkish part of the journey with 6 piaster for the third rayon above approximately 1'000 km and one additional piaster for the Istanbul city distribution charge to the Austrian post office.

Straight line PORTO in black applied in Bucharest and charged due '25' kreuzer on arrival. Minor imperfections of no significance, a remarkable cover, the Cuza issue being used to an external destination being extremely rare, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume XII on page 113 and 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 434. rnProvenance: Collection 'Moldau', 167. Corinphila sale (Dec. 2010), lot 7089.rnNote: Pitesti only had a Fieldpost office during the Crimean War which was closed in April 1857 and not transfered into a Consular Post Office. Mail from Pitesti abroad had therefore to be sent by the Romanian Post to the next Austrian Levant P.O., in this case in Bucharest. The 20 para Cuza definitive covers therefore only the Romanian inland journey to Bucharest and the PORTO handstamp indicates this fact.
