    1843 (Aug 1): 60 r. black, with large margins all round and showing horizontal frameline at top, of good colour, of unused appearance but the cancellation has been removed. Nevertheless, a fine 'spacefiller' for a rare stamp.

    1843: 60 reis grey-black, Intermediate Impression, a fine horizontal pair with huge margins all round used on obverse of second sheet of 1845 entire letter from Rio de Janeiro, written in German to Theodor Wille in Santos, carried by sea at single rate and endorsed at top 'p. Ypiranga' in manuscript; the adhesives tied by crisp strike of CORREIO GERAL DA CORTE datestamp (Jan 24) in black. Illustrated in "Bulls Eyes on Covers" by Juchert / Maassen on page 135.     1882/84: 200 r. pale red brown, Type I, used on 1884 cover to Pisa, Italy tied by segmented cork handstamp in blue with corresponding BATATAES cds below (June 7). Reverse with Sao Paulo cds (June 9), Rio de Janeiro cds's (June 10) and Pontedera cds of arrival (July 7). A fine cover.

    1894/97: Liberty Head 300 r. green & black, 1'000 r. green & violet used with 1900 200 r. blue on registered 1904 cover to Fiume, Hungary tied by 'Rio de Janeiro' cds's (Feb 12) in black. Framed registration cachet and faint 'AR' at base with Fiume arrival cds on reverse. A scarce usage of the 1'000 reis on cover.

    1938 (May 22): Cover carried on the ill-fated Flight from Rio de Janediro to Santos carried by the Seaplane 'Guaracy', which crashed into the sea after engine failure in bad weather killing one passenger. The cover with stamps floated off, shows yellow on green "Servico Postal / Correspondencia dilacerada" label tied at Porto Alegre and the front with two line ACCIDENTE / DE AVIÃO cachet in black. Scarce Nierinck 380522a.
