    1839 (Sept 22): Complete folded letter from Cairo to London with French ship, showing red framed French "PAQUEBOTS DE LA MEDITERRANEE" on front, Maltese cachet "PURIFIE AL LAZARET", two slits due to the purification procedure and straight line "Malta Post Office"; in addition on reverse blue Paris transit cds (Oct 15), black arrival mark (Oct 17) and British taxation mark "BRITISH: 10 - FOREIGN: 1. 10 1/2". Interesting item with manuscript instructions on how to treat the correspondence: "Write on the letters "via Marseilles" - this saves 2 or 3 days".
