    1868 (March 23): Internal Field Force cover, written by Sir Robert Napier from Camp Lat, 263 miles inland from Zulla, to Major Russell at Base HQ in Zulla, endorsed "O. H. M. Service" at upper left and countersigned "Napier" at lower left and struck with "FIELD FORCE POST OFFICE / ABYSSINIA" datestamp "23 MA 68" in red. Reverse with "F.F." obliterator and "FIELD FORCE POST OFFICE / ABYSSINIA" datestamp in red "28 MA 68". Cover opens well for Exhibit display, one of just two known covers with the "F.F." obliterator in red, both being included in this sale.

    1868 (April 8): Stampless cover and complete contents on Bengal Cavalry notepaper, datelined "Camp Antalo", with interesting contents "I have just arrived here to take command of the Cavalry, but today I have been ordered to escort treasure by double marches to Magdala. Napier is within 30 miles of Theodore's Camp.... stamps are not procureable here, so you will have to pay for this, but not extra as it is an Abyssinia letter". The envelope is endorsed "Abyssinian Letter, via Marseilles" and countersigned at lower left. Reverse shows "F.F." and  "FIELD FORCE POST OFFICE / ABYSSINIA" datestamps in black (April 10 and April 15), London cds in red (May 3) and Bristol arrival cds, where charged 10 d. due (Officer's rate via Marseilles). A remarkable and rare cover, stampless covers from this Campaign numbering less than 10 recorded examples.

    1868 (May 28): Cover to Cheltenham endorsed at left "Officer's Letter, Brigadier General Stewart, Commanding at Senafe", franked by India 1867 6 a. 8 p. slate, some minor toning, tied by "F.F." obliterator in black. Reverse with "FIELD FORCE POST OFFICE / ABYSSINIA" cds in black "28 MY 68" and Cheltenham arrival (June 14). A scarce cover.

    1857: 1 d. rose, wmk. Large Crown, perf. 14; used example on somewhat aged piece cancelled by "F.F." (Field Force) obliterator in black. Extremely rare, believed to be the only such usage on piece; also a defective 6 d. mauve pl. 6 cancelleed by superb strike of the "F.F." obliterataor-the only recorded example on this value. Note: The Field Force did not sell British stamps, the few known used examples were all carried to the Campaign by Officers and Soldiers and accepted by the Post Office at Zulla.

    1865: Indian stamps used with "F.F." (Field Force) obliterator, the collection on leaves with 1860 8 p. (6 examples), 1865 ½a. blue (3, one pair and a single on dated piece), 1 a. brown (8 including a rare block of four), 2 a. orange-yellow (3), 1866 4 a. green (7, including a pair), 1867 6 a. 8 p. slate (7) and rare 8 a. carmine (1). A rare and generally fine collection with most strikes well above average.

Extremely rare. Provenance: Ex collection Colonel J. R. Danson, April 1977, lot 516.

Generally fine, a rare selection.

    1873 (Jan 21): Stampless envelope written in the hand of General Charles Gordon and addressed to Shepheard's Hotel in Cairo, struck with intaglio "POST OFFICE EGYPTIAN KHEDEVIATE - MASSAWA -1871" in black (Maktab Bosta Khedevie Mariye Massawa), Arabic manuscript "From the Hospodar General of the Sudan" at left and fine strike of "POSTE KHEDEVIE EGIZIANE / MASSAWA" datestamp in black. Reverse with "Poste Vice-Reali Egiziane / Suez" transit cds (Feb 2) and faint Cairo arrival (Feb 3). A famous and very rare cover. Provenance: Ex collection Colonel J. R. Danson, April 1977, lot 534.
