1 / 11The Great Bitter Lakes & Suez Canal Locals 1967/75: The astonishing and huge collection formed by the late Peter Bottrill, with stamps produced on the 14 ships trapped in the Canal from June 5, 1967 until 1975 due to the Egypt / Israeli War. After sending home passengers by air and treating over 400 wounded Egyptian soldiers, the crews of the 14 ships were thereafter stuck in the Bitter Lakes. The Great Bitter Lake Assoc. produced it's own stamps of which this is probably the most complete collection extant. Myriads of covers (240+) in combination with Egyptian stamps, many covers accepted and delivered without Egyptian adhesives, covers received with 'Mail from the S.S.Nordwind / trapped in Suez since 1967' cachets or P.O. labels, extraordinary ephemera including Telegram home (dated 17 June, 1967) saying 'Safe and Well' from an electrician on the 'Melampus', 1968 and 1972 letters from the U.P.U. to Capt.
