Reverse struck with "POTI NOV 30 65" (julian) transit cds and front with "CONSTANTINOPLE 9 JANV 66 TURQUIE" (gregorian) transit cds of the French PO in Constantinople. Reverse with two French ambulant and LIBOURNE arrival (Jan 19, 66) cds's. A most interesting cover sent from Georgia under Russian rule to France via a French PO in the Levant. Cert. Buchsbayew (2021).rnNote: After 1863, the adhesives on inland mail and mail abroad were no more cancelled with dotted numeral marks but by circular datestamps. In very rare cases when the datestamp was lost or damaged, a manuscript note of the former number of the numeral obliterator was used to cancel the adhesives. After 28 days this cover had crossed the Black Sea, and was given to the French PO in Constantinople from where it made its way to Marseille. Upon arrival the receiver had to pay 60 centimes, the rate for unpaid mail from the Levant to France, introduced just nine days before.rnProvenance: Collection Gordey A.
