    1840: Mulready 1 d. wrapper, a used example, stereo A27, mailed from London to Paris with manuscript additional prep-payment "10" (pence) at top left, struck on despatch with red Maltese Cross and "PAID" London datestamp (May 28) and oval framed "P.F." in red. Circular "Angl. / Calais" entry marking in red (May 30) where charged '15' décimes due to pay in manuscript. A wonderful first month usage, extremely rare and attractive.rnrnNote: This cover was used as the frontispiece to the Jack Blanc collection.

    1840: 1 d. black, plate 2, lettered FA, a used example with close to huge margins all round, tied to 1840 entire letter from Greenock top Paris, France by red Maltese Cross, the balance of the rate '10' (pence marked twice on the face of the entire in manuscript but left unpaid. Reverse with GREENOCK despatch and London transit (Dec 16) cds in red. "Angl. / Calais" cds in red and charged on arrival '20' décimes due (10d. sterling + 10 décimes Calais-Paris). The adhesive with two small creases at top of no great significance on such a rare and attractive entire. Cert.     1841: 1 d. red-brown, a single example, lettered AH, imperceptibly touched at left and with three huge margins showing portions of adjoining stamps at top (with part marginal imprint) and at base, tied to 1841 entire letter from Dublin to Bordeaux by black Maltese Cross. Reverse with Dublin despatch datestamp (Sept 21) in red and London transit cds. Manuscript at left and at right '10' (pence and décimes) left unpaid and the adhesive tied in transit by "Angl. / Calais" entry marking in red (Sept 25). Charged on arrival in Bordeaux (Sept 27) with '24' décimes to pay (10d. sterling = 10 décimes, 14 décimes for Calais-Bordeaux). A most attractive and rare entire.

    1841: 1 d. red-brown, worn, a fine four margined example used on 1847 entire letter to Laval, France paying internal rate, tied by London '8' numeral obliterator with "T.P. / Blackfriars Rd." at right, with "Angl. / Boulogne" entry marking in red and taxed '16' décimes due in manuscript; together with a matching cover from 1853 with fine 1 d. imperf. from Manchester taxed originally '8' décimes handstruck, altered to '16' in manuscript. A fine and scarce pair on well researched Exhibit page.

    1873/80: 3 d. rose plate 12, a single example originally mailed on 1874 cover to Milano, Italy tied by London duplex in black (May 11) and underpaid by 3 d. Deleted 'PD' in red and taxed on arrival with 1870 Postage Due 60 c. pair. Readdressed to Paris, France and taxed on arrival, struck with framed "RÉEXPEDIÉ / TAXE ETRANGÈRE / TAXE FRANCAISE / TOTAL" rate box in red and eventual charge levied of 1 fr. 60 centimes within box in manuscript and confirming handstruck '16' décimes in black. Edge wear to envelope but scarce.

    1873/80: 6 d. grey plate 13, a single example originally mailed on 1874 cover to Piombino, Italy tied by "Clonakilty / 138" duplex in black (June 27) and fully paid. Readdressed to Morbihan, France and taxed at double weight on arrival struck with framed "RÉEXPEDIÉ / TAXE ETRANGÈRE / TAXE FRANCAISE / TOTAL" rate box in red and eventual charge levied of 80 centimes within box in manuscript and confirming handstruck '8' in black. Edge wear to envelope but scarce.

    1875: 1¼ d. brown on buff stationery card, used in 1878 to Paris cancelled by "Longton / 556" duplex. Fully paid with Paris arrival (March 29) and readdressed to Tours, placed in pillar box without payment. Struck twice with "Trouvé à la bôite" in black and struck with "40" tax marking in black. Unusual.

    1887: ½ d. vermilion and 1881 1 d. lilac used on 1891 cover to France tied by "Alderley Edge / F56" duplexes (Dec 2), underpaid and found to be double weight, struck with framed "AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFISANT" in red and taxed on arrival with Duval 1881/92 Postage Due 4 c. black - five examples and single 30 c. black cancelled at Villenouvelle (Dec 31). The 4 c. value is rare on letter (Maury T13+T18), a most unusual franking.

    1896: 1 d. pink stationery envelope to Hyeres, France up-rated with 1 d. lilac and ½ d. vermilion tied by "Hastings Station Office / 342" duplexes (Feb 15). Found to be double weight and taxed on arrival with Duval 1881/92 Postage Due 50 c. black (Maury T20), forwarded on again to Cannes (to Hotel California) and taxed there with 1893 Postage Due 50 c. lilac. Scarce with both issues of Postage Dues.

    1887: ½ d. vermilion, a single example used on illustrated advertising envelope to France and underpaid 7 d. for triple weight (43 gr. in manuscript at left), struck with AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFISANT and "T" marking, taxed on arrival with Postage Due 1893 10 c. brown, 30 c. bright red and rare usage of 1 fr. rose on yellowish paper (Maury T25) all tied by 'Valenciennes' cds's (Sept 8). A most attractive and scarce cover.

Unusual.

    1859/73: Pre UPU covers (4) on Exhibit leaves, all taxed as short paid to France and all struck with INSUFFICIENTLY / PREPAID handstamps in black; with 1859 entire franked 1 d. red stars (4) from Liverpool charged with handstruck '12' décimes due, 1865 cover with single 1864/79 1 d. red taxed '7' décimes; 1866 cover with 1858 2 d. blue and 4 d. vermilion charged '10' décimes with 'PD' deleted by London numeral '30'; and 1873 cover with 3 d. rose with 'PD' deleted and taxed '9' décimes due. Generally fine, a scarce group.

    1876/81: Post UPU covers (6) on Exhibit leaves, all to France and all struck with newly introduced "T" marking in black and charged on arrival, with 1876 and 1878 covers from Liverpool and Birmingham each bearing 1864/79 1 d. red taxed with handstruck '5' and '4' décimes handstamps in black; 1879 cover to Paris with 2½ d. mauve charged with  '5' décimes handstamp, similar cover franked bantam ½ d. and 1 d. reds (2) charged '5' and redirected to Barcelona where charged with "B/0.50c.", 1880 cover with single 1 d. red charged '3' décimes and forwarded to Barcelona with "BB/30" due marking and 1881 cover with 1 d. lilac (14 dots) used from Oban charged '3' décimes due. Generally fine, a scarce group.

    1885/97: Collection on Exhibit leaves (12 covers / cards) with mail from GB taxed on arrival in France with Duval issue Postage Dues; with 1894 stampless cover taxed by 5 c. black in a rare interpanneau marginal strip of five; short paid covers with 1885 cover from Jersey taxed by 30 c. black, 1886 cover taxed pair of 5 c. black, 1890 cover taxed by pair of 15 c. black, 1890 cover taxed by 10 c. (2) and scarce 60 c. black; further usages with 1893 coloured issue etc. Condition varies but generally fine.

    Crimean War / Baltic Expedition 1853: France 20 c. blue imperforate with ample to large margins all round, paying the reduced Military concession rate and tied to 1855 cover to France by 'gros points' handstamp in black, mailed from a Naval vessel in the Baltic (another cover from this correspondence was datelined 1st November from Nargen (Naaisaar Island) off Estonia) and struck with KIELER BAHNHOF cds in black, and reverse with HAMBURG cds (Nov 16) and HAMBURG T&T cds (Nov 16), framed "DANEMARK / R.2" Rayon 2 handstamp in black and "Tour-T / Valenciennes' entry mark (Nov 18) and charged with handstruck '9' décimes due on arrival. Worcester cds in red on front (Aug 1) and the cover readdressed on to Paris and handstamped INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED in black.
