    Germany Empire 1871 (Feb 12): Entire letter from Köln to Paris, bearing 1872 (Jan) Small shield 1 gr. carmine (2) with good perfs, tied by clear "COELN-BAHNHOF" despatch cds in black, framed "Aus dem Briefkasten" and "Affranch:insuff:" handstamps in black as well as French "PRUSSE 15 FEVR. 72 ERQUELINES" entry cds in blue alongside. Underpaid in the July 1858 tariff which was valid until May 1872, therefore taxed as unpaid with 50 c. for a single rate cover from the second Prussian rayon minus the franking resulting in '3' décimes taxe. A most interesting entire in the second month of the Small shield definitives.

    Germany Empire 1872 (Sept 3): Entire letter from Hamburg-Altona to Bordeaux, bearing 1872 (Jan) Small shield 5 gr. ochre-brown with good perfs, tied by clear framed "ALTONA STADT-POST-EXPEDITION No 1" despatch datestamp in black with framed "Affranch:insuff:" handstamp in black and French "ALLEMAGNE 5 SEPT 72 ERQ. PARIS" entry cds in blue alongside. Underpaid as a second rate letter, therefore taxed with '6' décimes. Horizontal file fold well away from the franking, nevertheless an interesting entire.

    Germany Empire 1874 (April 17): Cover from Bremen to Bordeaux, bearing 1872 (June) Large shield ½ gr. orange and 1874 2½ on 2½ gr. brown-orange with good perfs, tied by clear BREMEN despatch cds in black and French "ALLEMAGNE 19 AVRIL 74 PAG. PARIS" entry cds in blue, framed "aus dem Briefkasten" and "Unzureichend frankirt" handstamps in black alongside. Underpaid as a second rate letter, therefore taxed with '9' décimes. Light horizontal file fold, nevertheless an interesting and appealing entire.

    Germany Empire 1891 (Aug 19): Stationery postcard 5 pf. green from Mainz to Aulnay de Saintogne, the indicium cancelled by MAINZ despatch cds in black. As there was no additional franking on this inland postcard, it was taxed upon arrival with twice the 6¼ c. deficiency, but only the timbre taxe type Duval 2 c. black was affixed to the card and tied by the AULNAY arrival (Aug 21) cds. Pinhole aside the indicium but an attractive card with erroneous taxation Maury 11.

    Germany Empire 1894 (July 19): Large sized envelope from Fürstenstein to Paris, bearing 1889 Krone & Wertziffer 20 pf. blue with good perfs, tied by FÜRSTENSTEIN despatch cds in black. Upon arrival taxed as a letter of the 16th weight rate with twice the insufficiency using Van Dyck 1 fr. brown (two pairs and three single adhesives) plus one single Duval 50 c. black. Cover with some tear and wear as to be expected from an item of that sheer size, nevertheless an amazing timbre taxe franking Maury 25+20.

    Germany Empire 1896 (Jan 16): Formular postcard from Aachen to Segré, bearing no franking at all, struck by AACHEN despatch cds in black. Upon arrival taxed as a letter with Duval 1893/1935 5 c. blue, 15 c. green and 30 c. red, all in type I paying the 50 c. rate. A rare usage of an unfranked formular card Maury 28/I+30//+33/I.

    Germany Empire 1874/76: Lot five covers incl. 1874 from Haguenau to Strasbourg, forwarded to Paris but refused by the addressee, sent back to Strasbourg where opened to figure out the sender, in addition three covers with the new PFENNIGE definitives used in the second half of the year when Germany had already joined the GPU while France did not, also 1877 double rate letter paid insufficiently and regarded by the French postal administration as unpaid. An interesting lot.

    Germany Empire 1882/1900: Lot eight covers/postcards incl. 1884 unpaid envelope with Duval 20 & 30 c., 1885 partially paid cover from Mülhausen to Épinal where taxed with 40 c., then forwarded to Paris where regarded unpaid and taxed with Duval 30 c. & 10 c. in a gutter pair, in addition four postcards, one taxed erroneously with Duval 1 c. instead of 10 c., also 1895 cover Paris to Lorraine where taxed with 35 pf., refused to Paris where taxed with 40 centimes. Interesting lot.
