Rezmeritá, showing Post Horse and "GR" Postmaster's initials and "POSTA GALBINU-1864", struck in violet with manuscript "Cu porto" alongside (an insight as to how the private Postmaster's linked with the nascent postal system) and rate "30" parale in red crayon. Slight file hole in centre not greatly detracting from the appearance of this rarity. With comments on this item from Dragomir Kiriac and Dr. L. N. Tripcovici. Note: Both this and the next lot with the 5 pa. block of four were sent to the Ministry of Justice in Bucharest, this piece was mailed on September 28th, the 5pa. cover being mailed on September 22nd. The entire is pre-paying the 5 bani rate for Printed Matter, however the stamps in use at the time would not have been able to correctly pre-pay the rate, as the 3 bani value was not issued until three days after this letter was posted.  A dramatic and attractive entire and an extremely rare franking showing a unique usage. Illustrated in Edition d'Or on page 138 and in Handbook II on page 211. Cert. Heimbüchler (2010).

4 bani deep blue, four examples used on magnificent 1871 cover from Bucharest to Madame Stourdza at Skiéa, Tirgu-Frumos; the adhesives in two horizontal pairs (Transfer Types 5-6 and 1-2) with left hand pair just touched into outer frame-line at top and all tied by "Bucuresci" datestamps (Feb 20) in black. Framed "P.D." at lower right and reverse with "Tirgu Frumos" arrival cds (24/2) in black. A wonderful cover and a rare over-franking: the rate at this time was 10 bani per ½ ounce (decree of October 3/15, 1870); however 6 bani was not a great deal of money to the rich 'boyar' Stourdza family: for a further example of this over-payment see lot 5155 in the "Cornelia" sale, Corinphila 149, Feb 2007. Illustrated in Edition d'Or on page 120 and in Handbook II on page 206. Cert. Heimbüchler (2009).

Austrian Consular Post Office in Bacau 1863: The famous cover bearing no less than twelve examples of the 3 soldi green, perf. 14., used on re-folded cover to Venice, all cancelled by centrally struck "BAKEU" datestamps (18/3) in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 721, covers "RRR"). This remarkable multiple franking is mentioned in Tchilinghirian & Stephen "the collection of A. Rivolta contains an extraordinary cover" and was mailed via Austrian P.O. in Jassy (21/3), Vienna (26/3) and with Venice arrival (27/3).
