    Cameos 1874 (Aug): 4 d. pale brown, wmk. Crown CC, imperforate, used on 1881 registered cover to Washington DC, USA in combination with 1880 ½ d. orange: a single and horizontal strip of three, comb. perf. 14, for 6 d. rate, all tied by "Gambia / Paid" cds's in red (July 28) with manuscript "Registered No 21" at upper left. Oval "Registered / Liverpool" datestamp of transit (Aug 14), reverse with "Gambia / Paid" (July 30) cds in red, New York (Aug 27) and Washington DC datestamps. Insignificant oil stain on single ½ d. but a remarkable and spectacular cover.rnProvenance: RL, London, 1968; Spink, London, 12 Nov 2009, lot 130.
